Metals

Iron

Frequently linked to discolouration and older pipework.

What is Iron?

Iron is abundant in geology and in older iron and steel water mains.

Why test for it?

Iron is commonly investigated where water appears discoloured or where staining is observed.

Where can it come from?

  • Cast iron mains and internal pipework
  • Natural geology
  • Corrosion products

How is it measured?

Determined by ICP-MS or ICP-OES. Dissolved and total iron can be distinguished by filtering the sample on collection.

What does my result mean?

The difference between total and dissolved iron indicates how much is present as particulate material.
