Filter Technology

Can water filters remove PFAS?

Performance varies by technology, compound and test conditions. Measurement, not category, is what settles the question for a specific product.

Technology sets the range, testing sets the answer

Different filtration technologies interact with PFAS in different ways, and performance also varies between individual PFAS compounds — chain length and functional group both matter.

That means a general statement about a filter category cannot be transferred to a specific product. Only testing that product, under defined conditions, produces evidence about that product.

What a meaningful test looks like

A challenge water is prepared with known concentrations of the target compounds. Samples are taken immediately before and after filtration and analysed by the same method.

Reduction is then calculated per compound, with detection limits reported. Where a result falls below the detection limit, the reduction is expressed relative to that limit rather than as an absolute figure.

Performance over volume

A filter's behaviour at the start of its life may differ from its behaviour near the end of its rated capacity. Testing across the claimed lifetime gives a far more useful picture than a single early sample.

Common questions

Can a laboratory test prove a marketing claim?
A test produces evidence about the product under the conditions tested. Whether a specific marketing claim is permissible is a separate regulatory and legal question.
