Enterococci
An additional faecal indicator group, persistent in water.
What is Enterococci?
Intestinal enterococci are bacteria used as a complementary faecal indicator.
Why test for it?
Enterococci can persist longer than E. coli in some conditions, which makes them useful in private supply investigations.
Where can it come from?
- Faecal contamination
- Surface water ingress
- Animal activity near a supply
How is it measured?
Determined by membrane filtration and selective culture, reported per 100 mL.
What does my result mean?
Interpreted with E. coli and coliforms as part of a microbiological picture.
