Chlorine

A disinfectant residual that affects taste and odour.

What is Chlorine?

Chlorine is used to disinfect mains water and is often present as a low residual at the tap.

Why test for it?

Chlorine reduction is one of the most commonly claimed filter functions, so it is a frequent parameter in product testing.

Where can it come from?

  • Water treatment disinfection
  • Booster dosing in distribution
  • Secondary disinfection in buildings

How is it measured?

Free and total chlorine are determined promptly after sampling, since the residual decays. On-site or immediate laboratory measurement is used.

What does my result mean?

Chlorine results are time-sensitive; the interval between sampling and measurement is recorded with the result.
