What does "99% removal" really mean?
A percentage without a starting concentration, a method and a detection limit is not a measurement.

Percentages need a starting point
A 99% reduction from a high influent concentration and a 99% reduction from a low one describe very different absolute outcomes. The influent value is part of the claim.
Detection limits set the ceiling
If a filtered sample falls below the detection limit, the calculated reduction is bounded by that limit. Reporting "greater than X%" is the honest form of that result.
Conditions travel with the number
Flow rate, temperature, volume filtered and the specific compound all influence the figure. A reduction percentage should always be read together with the conditions that produced it.
